Part of the problem with your cell phone, is that they use H.264 compression, same as HD camcorders.
This relies on reference frames, as few as 2 per second, that the remaining 28 frames are based on. A poor method for motion!

A simple switch to good old MiniDv will help, at least to a point. MiniDv is uncompressed in the brightness channel, and what little compression it has, is interframe. No frame is dependent on its neighbor for its image data.

By taking the 29-97 frames/second from MiniDv and doing what your camera does under normal conditions (Interpreting frames) you can get a 15:1 slow motion.

In real editing, I have gone to 20% (5:1) with pretty good smoothness.

Compared to your phone, even a cheap, low-end MiniDv camera (new or used) will likely give much better results.

For extreme slow motion, bullets, hummingbirds, exploding water balloons etc, you need the 1000:1 or better like you can get from the casio. But for sport wipe-outs etc, you just need a better format.

Is the ContourHD video camera a great camera for making movies or homemade movies?

Since it does not have a mic jack, manual audio control, small lens and tiny imaging chip - and no zoom or other controls, using it as a "general purpose" cam means using it in a way that it was not designed to be used...

Will it work? Sure. Is it a good way to go? Not really.

For example: A bicycle is a great way to get from one place to another. But if you want to carry a bunch of people or groceries, using a wagon or a car or a truck would be a much better way to get that stuff moved. That said, if the bicycle is your only choice, it is what it is and you do the best you can with the tools available.

The least expensive camcorders with a mic jack AND manual audio control are the Canon HV20/HV30/HV40 and Sony HDR-HC9. They are both consumer-grade miniDV tape based camcorders. It goes up from here. You will need a good tripod, mics, and lots of other equipment.

"Pixel count" is not a measurement real camcorders use. They are Standard Definition, High definition or Ultra-high definition and the number of horizontal lines and interlaced frames vs progressive frames combine to determine resolution.

We don't know what your home made mic can do - consumer grade camcorders use a 1/8" stereo audio jack... if they even have a audio-in connectivity (other than their built-in mics). Most consumer cams do not have manual audio control.

The "prosumer" range starts at the Sony HDR-FX7 and HDR-FX1000.

Pro camcorders use XLR audio jacks...

Tips on shooting a home video?
